The Most Common Reasons For Erectile Dysfunction

Posted under Health on Sunday 1 June 2008

Erectile dysfunction is a condition which causes a man to experience difficulties in attaining or maintaining an erection. The process of attaining an erection, although it seems simple, is a complex process which can be impacted for a variety of reasons. Any problem, whether psychological or physical or a combination of these, can have a negative effect on a man’s ability to obtain an erection or in other words experience erectile dysfunction (ED).

Physical causes of erectile dysfunction are any physical problem which causes damage or a disruption in the sequence of events which eventually lead to an erection. Many bodily processes are used to create an erection; these included the nerve impulses in the brain and spine as well as the penis. They also include appropriate responses by the veins and arteries in the groin along with appropriate responses by the muscles and fibrous tissues of the penis.

Diseases which cause damage or a breakdown in the arteries, muscles or the surrounding tissue of the penis can be a cause of ED. Some of the most common diseases with ED impact are:

Diabetes: Diabetes have been seen to cause damage to the nerves and arteries in the penis causing difficulties to achieve an erection. About 35 to 50% of the men with diabetes have reported experienced ED, however estimates are that up to 75% of the men with diabetes will experience ED within their lifetimes.

Kidney Disease: Kidney disease causes a chemical change which can have an effect on hormones, circulation system, nerve functions and energy levels. These changes can also have a negative effect on a male’s sexual ability and sex drive. Also the drugs used to treat kidney disease can bring on erectile problems.

Neurological disease: The nervous system is one of the most important systems in the process of achieving and maintaining an erection. ED is often experienced by men that have experienced a stroke, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer and Parkinson’s disease and other spinal cord injuries. This occurs due to the problems with the transmission of nerve impulses from the brain to the penis and back.

Vascular Disease: Vascular diseases are the diseases which affect the vascular or blood vessels. Diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension and high cholesterol can have an effect on erectile performance, since they all restrict the flow of blood to the heart, brain and other body parts. These diseases account for nearly three-quarters of the ED patients.

Prostate cancer: While prostate cancer does not specifically cause ED, however the treatment of prostate cancer, radiation, hormonal manipulation and surgery, can cause erection problems.

Not all physical causes are the results of diseases. There are several other causes that can result in physical difficulties with erections. These include:

Surgery: Surgery for prostate cancer and bladder cancer, which require the removal of nerves and tissues around the area with cancer, can result in ED. Sometimes this effect is temporary, while others may result in more permanent damage.

Injury: An injury to the bladder, pelvis, spinal cord or penis could cause ED, especially if surgery is required.

Hormonal imbalances: Hormonal imbalances, such as those caused by a tumor of the pituitary gland, kidney and liver disease or from hormonal treatment for prostate cancer, can affect the way a man responds to sexual stimulation.

Venous leak: Problems with the veins which prevent blood from leaving the penis during an erection resulting in an inability to maintain an erection is known as a venous leak. A venous leak can be the result of disease or an injury.

Tobacco, alcohol and drug use.

Prescription drugs: There are over 200 prescription drugs that have shown to have a negative effect on erectile performance. That’s why I recommend you try natural remedies.

Hand Washing Now A Fundamental Part Of Infection Control

Posted under Health on Sunday 1 June 2008

It may seem obvious but a major element of infection control is to keep hands clean and wash them regularly. This simplistic approach has been deemed by many as the best weapon against the spreading of infection and putting the confinement of infection under control. Predominantly this is the case within the healthcare industry but can just as easily apply to many other industries and operations, not just in the medical profession.

The creation of a safe environment is the primary function of infection control, in all manner of different locations and situations. Currently infection control has become an increasingly important aspect of healthcare. The growth in antibiotic resistant organisms, widely known as ’superbugs’ has meant that hand washing has shot to the top of the agenda for many healthcare professionals. A systematic approach to hand washing forms a vital barrier to the spreading of infections and subsequently is regarded as essential in the medical industry.

In a recent conference delegates were given the task of finding an industry-wide approach to infection control. This conference was fundamentally international in nature with the ultimate objective of creating infection control practices that would be uniform in hospitals across the globe. Professionals from the infection control field met with healthcare professionals from a number of distinct sectors and discussed the best way to incorporate procedures that would lead to a safer, less infected environment for patients and workers alike. A major part of this conference was understanding the antibiotic resistant organisms and the ways in which they could be controlled.

Infection control experts estimate that around two and a half million spread infections occur annually in the US alone; placing these organisms under control is a major concern for healthcare professionals. The result of these infections was estimated to be around thirty thousand deaths as a direct consequence, while a further seventy thousand deaths could be attributed to the spread of infections indirectly. One of the primary reasons that infection control has become so important is due to the financial payouts that must be paid in the event of deaths; put simply, medical institutions cannot afford these reimbursements and are understandably attempting to reduce their occurrence.

Hand hygiene was found to be an essential part of the infection control problem. The conference found that while there are numerous different hand cleansing agents available on the market, the agent was of minimal importance. Of greater importance was the procedures put in place to ensure operators hands were suitably cleansed at all times. The conference argued that hand hygiene was the most important procedure in infection control, in addition, while soap and detergents are widely used; it was in fact antiseptic agents that were found to be the most effective. These antiseptic agents should be used in areas where patients are at the highest risk, for instance, in intensive car units and burn wards.

The delegates also decided that these high risk areas should receive regular assessments of the risks posed to patients. They also recommended that in areas where there may be a lack of hand washing facilities, a self foaming agent that does not require water to clean should be used at regular intervals throughout the day and especially after contact has been made. In addition, if the hands are heavily soiled, a detergent wipe is the ideal way to cleanse the hands before applying an antiseptic agent.

The conference also discussed each of the situations when hand washing formed an essential part of infection control, for instance after invasive examinations or the touching of open wounds. Hand washing technique was also a major part of the discussion, eventually finding a suitable method that ensured that all risk of infection had been removed from the hands before visiting the next patient. This infection control conference has made findings that may seem simplistic and ultimately obvious to some, but without regulations and official cleansing practises it is easy to let the escalating problem of infection spreading to continue unabated. Thanks to the delegates work, it is now the case that all healthcare professionals are now aware of their responsibilities in terms of hand cleansing and infection control.

How Just About Anyone Can Prevent Erectile Dysfunction

Posted under Health on Sunday 1 June 2008

While ED could be a signal that there is some other more serious medical condition, it often is just a reaction to the aging process or the environment around us.

There are two main causes of ED. These are physical and psychological. Physical are actual something wrong in the way the body either interprets or reacts to sexual stimulation. This could be in the nervous system and how signals are sent between the brain and the region around the penis.

This could also be in the muscular or arteriole system in getting sufficient blood flow or maintaining blood in the penis for an erection. There are many causes for this to occur including an injury to the groin or spine, various diseases including diabetes, kidney disease, prostate cancer or any other of a variety of medical conditions.

Psychological cause include stress, anxiety, guilt or anything else that could have an effect on the mind and the ability to concentrate on the ability to relax and enjoy the sexual experience.

A relaxed approach to the sexual experience is an important factor in reducing the stress or anxiety which could be contributing to any erectile problems.

If you have been or are concerned about erectile dysfunction or other erectile problems it is important that this be communicated not only to your doctor but also to your partner. The greater the level of communication between partners, the less stress that will be experienced by the participants and the less likelihood of erection problems due to psychological causes.

Other actions which can reduce the likelihood of experiencing erectile dysfunction include:

- Stop smoking
- Avoid excess use of alcohol or the use of any recreational drugs
- Maintaining a healthy diet, high in fiber and low in fats
- Keep your cholesterol in check, a high cholesterol level leads to hardening of the arteries and decrease blood flow making if more difficult to achieve and erection.
- Treat any symptom of high blood pressure.
- Lower stress in your life
- Exercise regularly
- Keep blood sugar level constant. This is especially important if you have diabetes.
- Regular medical check-ups to ensure that there are no other hidden medical problems which could be contributing to erection difficulties.

You should also remember that attainment of an erection may become more and more difficult as a man gets older. This is just a natural reaction to the aging process and should not be something that causes alarm.

Appropriate fore-play and open communication between partners should provide adequate stimulus to bring about an erection.

Appropriate attention to the physical environment, ensuring that the room temperature is not too cold and that the lighting is appropriate as to not raise the stress level will also be a benefit.

How To Lose Body Fat Fast

Posted under Health on Sunday 1 June 2008

You would think that when we lose weight we would just lose fat. What actually happens is that we lose of body fat, and muscle tissue. Clinical studies have proven that when the average person diets, the weight lost is on average 75 percent fat and 25 percent muscle.

Actually that same study showed, a very high percentage of this weight loss will probably be water loss. Do you know that water accounts for about 70 percent of the total body weight of an average person? Muscle tissue contains roughly 75 % and body fat contains roughly 50 percent water.

Fat can not be lost quickly. That is because it takes more energy to burn fat than protein. That means, if you take in lass calories and don’t increase your activity, your body will start using your glucose levels and then moves over to muscle tissues.

As a last resort it will start utilizing the extra fat in your body. That is not what we are trying to accomplish.

If you plan your exercise program according to your age and fitness (don’t exceed the cardio-fitness heart-rates for your group) you should be steadily working on the fat tissue, 2-5lbs a week is a good average.

There is no way to target certain areas only such as your stomach and thighs. Anyone who tells you that it is possible is trying to sell you something so keep your hand on your wallet.

Be moderate in what you put into your mouth. Exercise more often. Aim for 30 minutes a day. Change the program every so often. Walk. Run. Go up and down a flight a stairs a couple times a day.

Do some exercises that require weights. Try to make it varied or you’ll get bored.

Drink lots of water. Cut out soft drinks/energy drinks if you drink them. They are FULL of sugar. Be aware there are possibilities of danger from drinking too much water! Do everything in moderation.

I suggest that you not give up that food that you love or you’ll crave it and eat something equally bad to compensate. Moderation. A little of that favorite food will not hurt.

You must be patient. It is better to take the weight off safely and slowly and KEEP IT OFF than do one of these crazy grapefruit diets and lose the weight and put it back on as soon as you eat solid food again.

Each time you the TV on you will see weight loss advertisements. You will read and hear promises of huge weight loss. Do not fall for it!

Let’s face it. You and I want to get the fat off very quickly - and having that thought is not wrong - but it’s the wrong approach.

A leading doctor states “The reason all the other diets, diet foods, organic foods, healthy foods, medicines and all the rest don’t work in this modern technologically-amazing age is because THEY WERE DELIBERATELY DESIGNED NOT TO!”

While doing research I discovered the most amazing health site on the Internet Check It Out!

During weight loss research I found this site. Amazing Product !

Why You Should Try Erectile Dysfunction Herbal Remedies First

Posted under Health on Sunday 1 June 2008

Erectile dysfunction (ED) represents inability to achieve or maintain erection with sufficient rigidity and duration to permit satisfactory sexual performance.

There are many causes, psychological, neurological, physical and other associated medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, heart disease, hypertension and cigarette smoking which result in ED.

Currently, various treatment options are available for erectile dysfunction. They are PDE5 inhibitors, injection therapy, other oral prescription medicine, vacuum devices, surgical implants, herbal or over-the-counter medications.

The FDA does not approve over-the-counter medicines or herbal remedies for erectile dysfunction, as these are not under its jurisdiction. So, those interested in using herbal medications are advised to consult their physicians so as to determine the appropriate herb, dosage and side-effects.

Some of the herbal remedies used for correcting erectile dysfunction are:

L-arginine: It is an amino acid used by body to make nitric oxide which signals smooth muscle around the blood vessels leading to relaxation and this process dilates the blood vessels and helps in increase blood flow. Relaxation of smooth muscle in the penis leads to enhanced blood flow and further leading to an erection. L-arginine can be found naturally in food such as meat, poultry, dairy and fish and is available as oral L-arginine supplement.

Propionyl-L-Carnitine: Propionyl-L-carnitine enhances and improves erectile function, orgasm, sexual intercourse satisfaction, and general sexual well-being.

Gingko: This herb is used by people who experience sexual dysfunction as a side effect caused by antidepressant drugs. This herb relaxes smooth muscle and enhances blood flow inside penis. It has 50% success rate as per one study.

Zinc: High level of mineral zinc deficiency which is associated with diabetes, long-term use of diuretics, digestive disorders, and certain liver and kidney diseases, sometimes leads to erectile dysfunction.

Ashwagandha: The herb ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) which is also called Indian Ginseng increases stamina, energy, and sexual function. Side-effects of ashwagandha include drowsiness.

Yohimbe: This is a bark of West African yohimbe tree which is a source of yohimbine. Yohimbine is a compound which stimulates blood flow to the penis thus increasing libido and decreasing the time between ejaculations. Side effects generally include anxiety, dizziness, nausea, and drop in blood pressure, fatigue, abdominal pain, hallucinations, and paralysis. Due to its fatal qualities it is generally not recommended.

Tongkat ali: It works by increasing level of hormone testosterone. Testosterone is responsible for the growth and development of penis, testicles, prostate, scrotum and seminal vesicles. Normal testosterone levels help in maintaining energy level, fertility, as well as sexual desire.

Tribulus terrestris: It is herb which has been used in traditional medicines of China for centuries. Tribulus is often used for infertility, low libido and erectile dysfunction.

Gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL): GBL can be found in products which are marketed for improvement in sexual function. This substance can cause toxic and fatal side-effects which include seizures and coma.

Thus, with so many choices before a person who wants to improve erectile dysfunction with herbal remedies, it is imperative to choose the correct remedy after evaluating the risks factors and side effects. One must always consult physician and herbalist before undergoing such remedial measures.

Is Your Blood Pressure Medication Causing Impotence?

Posted under Health on Sunday 1 June 2008

Some common causes of erectile dysfunction are by health conditions, medications, or habits, or lifestyles that interfere with the blood flow to the penis to be able to sustain an erection for sexual intercourse.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure has no known symptoms. It is called the silent killer because you do not know you have it and you feel just fine. It is a major health problem and if it is left untreated can lead to erectile dysfunction, stoke, heart disease and others.

Unlike erectile dysfunction, which is a noticeable condition, high blood pressure does not cause symptoms you can feel or see.

Causes of high blood pressure and erectile dysfunction include the following.
1. High blood pressure keeps the arteries that carry blood into the penis from dilating the way they are supposed to. It also makes the penis lose its ability to relax and as a result, not enough blood flows into the penis to make it erect.

2. Men with high blood pressure may also have a low testosterone level. Testosterone is a male hormone that plays a big role in sexual activity.

3. High blood pressure alone can lead to erectile dysfunction. Some medications for treating high blood pressure such as diuretic otherwise known as water pills, and beta-blockers are the most commonly linked to erectile dysfunction.

4. Levitra is a medication that can undo the side effects of diuretics and beta-blockers, and give you a sustain erection long enough for sexual intercourse.

Diuretics may cause erectile dysfunction by decreasing the force of blood flow into the penis. Beta-blockers dampen nerve impulses that lead to an erection. They also make it more difficult for the arteries in the penis to widen and let the blood into the penis.

Steps to take if your blood pressure medicine causes erection problems

1. Talk to your doctor if you think your medications are causing problems with having an erection.
2. Lower your blood pressure, by diet, exercise or medications.
3. Some medications that treat high blood pressure have been known to cause erectile dysfunction. Certain medications may improve erectile dysfunction for some men.
4. Diuretics, or water pills, and beta-blockers, like Atenolol can cause erection problems. These are likely the drugs that the doctor may prescribe to you to help lower your blood pressure. The doctor may even prescribe a combination of blood pressure medication to reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction so you can be able to produce a sustained erection for sexual pleasure.
5. Ask your doctor if these medications causing problems. You might have to have them changed.

The power to have sexual freedom and take control of your blood pressure is in the palm of you hand. You can treat your erectile dysfunction by controlling your blood pressure by getting it checked regularly; take your medications, diet and exercise on a regular basis.
